Types of Casters
Swivel casters are ideal for a variety of applications. They’re used for material-handling equipment and on shopping carts and office chairs. These casters reduce overexertion and allow for greater worker efficiency. Casters also help to prevent workplace injuries.
How do I keep my casters from falling out?
There are several types of casters available, including swivel casters and rigid casters. If you’re considering purchasing a caster, it’s important to understand them. The most basic type of caster, rigid casters, have a wheel mounted in a fixed frame. Some models can be bolted to a surface and some have brackets for mounting vertical panels.
In contrast, swivel caster wheels heavy duty feature a fork with a ball bearing on top. This allows the caster to rotate around a central kingpin. Because of this, swivel casters can rotate in any direction. A heavy duty swivel caster is able to support up to a 10-ton load.
Heavy duty swivel casters typically have barrel-shaped wheels. Each wheel has a diameter of 1.5 inches or 40mm. All four casters are equipped with brakes.
Commercial casters are typically used on industrial equipment, tow lines, and kitchen utility carts. They can be configured with multiple wheels for increased load capacity. They’re usually finished in zinc plated finish.
Heavy duty swivel and rigid casters have a double row of ball bearings. These bearings ensure smooth wheeling on hard surfaces. Ball bearings also offer better rollability than straight roller bearings.
Rigid casters may have a two-piece or one-piece construction. Some models are manufactured with reinforced 3/8″ x 5″ plate steel legs.
