Haymarket cadet honored

Cadet 1st Lt. Stephanie Reed of Haymarket was recently awarded the Air Force Association's Cadet of the Year Award by the Leesburg Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. Reed is the daughter of Steven Reed and junior at Battlefield High School.

Reed was selected from among the squadron’s 70 cadets for this award based on her exemplary leadership and can-do attitude and determination during a period of adult leadership change. AFA’s annual award was established to recognize the outstanding cadet in each Civil Air Patrol squadron. Virginia Wing Commander Col David Carter presented the award to Reed during the squadron’s annual awards night on December 21.

Among other accomplishments, she previously served as the Leesburg Composite Squadron cadet commander, executive officer and flight commander and has served on staff at the organization’s annual summer encampment at Ft. Pickett.

Reed has been a member of CAP for four years and according to the organization, “has progressed through CAP enthusiastically and sets a positive example to her fellow cadets.”

In addition, several cadets were promoted during the ceremony: Cadet Airman First Class Jeremy Nathan; Cadet Senior Airman Melissa Wick; Cadet Senior Master Sergeant Zachary Kessler; Cadet Staff Sergeant Corban Baker; Cadet Staff Sergeant Alec Mielke; and Cadet Staff Sergeant Alex Routt.
