Two GDLL all-star teams remain in post season

As of Tuesday night, the Gainesville District Little League still had a chance to once again send two of its all-star teams to the state tournament as Virginia District 10 champions despite its nine teams sporting a combined 6-15 post-season record.

The girls’ 9- and 10-year-old softball team was one win away from claiming the District title for the second year in a row following a come-from-behind 27-9 route of Coles July 8.

They beat Coles in 2007 two games to one to earn the district crown before bowing out of the state tournament in the second round.

Two members from that team, Brianna Burch and Marli Irizzary, are back on the all-star squad again this year and have earned starting spots under manager Mike Ashcraft specifically because of their experience.

Meanwhile, the senior-level baseball all-stars needed just two more victories after scoring a first-round 13-4 win over Manassas Park-Yorkshire on Monday.

But there was no joy at the end of this season for any of the GDLL’s other seven teams as all had been eliminated from their respective tournaments by losing two games each.

The American division majors’ squad posted the best record of those seven teams with two wins and two losses. They were one of only three teams from the entire GDLL to win a first round match, beating the Southwestern Youth Association Central squad 5-3.

Fairfax-Dominion won a close 3-1 bout in the next round but Gainesville came back with an even closer 2-1 victory against the SYA West.

Gainesville and Annandale-North Springfield’s American division team combined for a 9-7 sluggers’ fest, though it was Annandale-North Springfield that escaped with a win and the right to move on to the next round.

The 10 and 11-year-old National division baseball team also claimed a first-round win last week by toppling Annandale-North Springfield’s National division team 6-4.

Neither offense nor defense for the young all-stars worked out well in the second and third rounds as the team lost its next two consecutive games by a combined 23-3 score.
