Brentsville club awarded at National Leadership Conference

The Brentsville District High School chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) participated at the FBLA National Leadership Conference held June 24–30 in Atlanta, Ga. Eight members from the school’s FBLA chapter attended to compete at the conference including Kimberly Butler, Shannon Butler, Allison Corish, Diane Corish, Lauren MacGregor, Rachel Sable, Mary Sisa, and Katelin Townsend. Sally Martin and Taryn Witt, Brentsville’s FBLA advisers, also attended.

Approximately 7,500 FBLA members, advisers, guests, and judges attended the conference where students had the opportunity to meet and compete with peer delegates representing each state, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Department of Defense Dependent Schools. Brentsville District High School FBLA students received the following awards:

Allison Corish was a recipient of the $1,000 Who’s Who in FBLA Scholarship as a result of her academic record, her two-year term as a Virginia State vice president, and her many FBLA activities and honors at the local, regional, state, and national levels.

Allison Corish and Townsend received third place in the nation in the Business Financial Plan Team Event. The event consisted of the submission of a 30-page written report and several oral presentations to a panel of judges. The team received a $300 award sponsored by the Apple Federal Credit Union Foundation.

Sable placed tenth in the nation in the Word Processing I Event which consisted of a performance component and an objective test.

Allison Corish, Townsend, and club member Stacey August, who did not attend the conference, were awarded the America Level Award. The America Level Award is the highest level awarded in the National Business Achievement Awards program. Students complete projects and activities throughout their FBLA career in order to receive recognition on each level.

Martin, who is chairman of the Business and Information Technology Department at BDHS, was recognized as one of five members of the National Awards Program Committee who oversees the competitive events. The Brentsville District High School FBLA chapter was named a National Gold Seal chapter and a National Outstanding Chapter based on participation in activities, competitive events and projects throughout the 2007-08 school year.
